The purpose of this web page is to help members of my Roper and Franklin families find information about their near ancestors. If you are seeking such a person, contact me at roperld@vt.edu.
My mother was named Georgina Elizabeth Dye, aged 21 years in 1945, living in Reading, Berkshire, England. She met an American Officer or NCO and accompanied him to social functions held at Greenham Common Air Base, Aldermaston Air Base and Newbury, all in the same county of Berkshire, England. His name was Richard Roper, and a brief intimate relationship developed, resulting in her pregnancy.
He was in England serving with the U.S. Army or Army Air Force during WW11. She knew him only from Jan - May 1945. She met colleagues of his who called him Richard. After May 1945 he was transferred elsewhere and they never met again.
The bases mentioned were used for transporting airborne troops to Europe on D-Day and thereafter. So they were occupied by both Army and Air Force personnel, forming Troop Carrier Squadrons and their support units, and Airborne Troop Divisions.
I would like to contact relations of any Serviceman named Roper, possibly with the forename of Richard, who was with the U.S. Army or Army Air Force at the following Bases in England, from Jan - May 1945, during World War Two:
